About Anubis Labs

Anubis Labs specializes in Subsurface Intelligence using proprietary Synthetic Aperture Radar technology for depth-resolved subsurface analysis serving the energy, mining, and critical infrastructure markets. Our core asset is a patented algorithm called HSAR (Harmonic SAR), which uses CUDA-accelerated processing to convert radar signals into depth-resolved material compositions, rendered as interactive 3D volumetric scenes streamed to a user’s browser. The platform replaces and supplements slow, costly, depth-limited methods like seismic surveys and exploratory drilling, compressing analysis cycles by roughly 100x. Anubis Labs differentiates on security and data sovereignty as much as on the algorithm itself: the platform runs a two-plane architecture, with a commercial SaaS plane handling the customer-facing app and a fully air-gapped, on-premises “sovereign” plane housing the sensitive HSAR core and raw data. Rather than replacing industry-standard tools like Petrel, DecisionSpace, or Leapfrog, Anubis feeds processed results into them and is architected to extend into government services and adjacent markets.

Position summary

Anubis Labs is seeking a Senior GIS Developer to design and build the web-based, 3D geospatial experiences at the heart of our SaaS platform — the interactive volumetric scenes that let customers explore depth-resolved subsurface and underground structures directly in the browser. This is a hands-on engineering role focused on turning large, complex geospatial and volumetric datasets into fast, intuitive, web-delivered visualizations. The ideal candidate has built production GIS solutions for websites, has deep experience displaying 3D volumetric data in SaaS applications, and is fluent in the open-source GIS ecosystem that underpins a modern, cloud-native geospatial platform. Experience visualizing subsurface, geological, or underground systems, and interoperating with industry tools such as Petrel, DecisionSpace, and Leapfrog, is highly valued.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain browser-based GIS and mapping applications that render interactive 2D and 3D geospatial content for the commercial SaaS platform.
  • Develop 3D volumetric visualizations of subsurface and underground structures and systems, streaming depth-resolved data to the browser with high performance and fidelity.
  • Architect efficient pipelines to convert, tile, and stream large volumetric datasets (voxel/block models, point clouds, structured grids) into web-friendly formats.
  • Integrate front-end mapping and 3D rendering layers with geospatial backends, spatial databases, and OGC-compliant web services.
  • Optimize rendering performance (WebGL/WebGPU), level-of-detail, and data streaming for smooth interaction with globe-scale and high-resolution subsurface data.
  • Build tools and workflows that interoperate with industry-standard subsurface software (e.g., Petrel, DecisionSpace, Leapfrog) and common geoscience data formats.
  • Collaborate with the HSAR science and platform teams to represent depth-resolved material compositions accurately and intuitively in the UI.
  • Contribute to both the commercial SaaS plane and the air-gapped sovereign plane, respecting the platform’s security and data-sovereignty requirements.
  • Write clean, tested, well-documented code across the full development lifecycle, and participate in code reviews and Agile delivery.
  • Stay current with the open-source geospatial and 3D visualization ecosystem and recommend tools and standards that advance the platform.

Required qualifications & experience

Web GIS & 3D Visualization

  • 7+ years of professional software development experience, with a strong focus on GIS, web mapping, and/or 3D data visualization.
  • Demonstrated experience building GIS solutions for websites — interactive maps, spatial dashboards, and geospatial web applications delivered to end users in the browser.
  • Proven experience displaying 3D volumetric data in SaaS applications, including streaming and rendering large 3D datasets to the browser.
  • Strong hands-on skill with WebGL (and/or WebGPU) and 3D web rendering libraries such as CesiumJS, deck.gl, and Three.js.
  • Proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript for front-end mapping, plus Python for geospatial data processing and pipelines.

Open-Source GIS & Geospatial Backend

  • Strong working knowledge of the common open-source GIS tools and technologies that support a SaaS application displaying 3D volumetric GIS data (see the technology list below).
  • Experience with spatial databases (PostGIS/PostgreSQL) and OGC-compliant web services (WMS, WFS, WMTS, WCS, OGC API) via servers such as GeoServer or MapServer.
  • Hands-on experience with geospatial data engineering using GDAL/OGR and vector/3D tiling pipelines (e.g., Tippecanoe, Martin, MBTiles/PMTiles, OGC 3D Tiles).
  • Understanding of coordinate reference systems, projections, and common geospatial data formats.

Subsurface & Volumetric Domain

  • Experience with common GIS and geoscience tools that build 3D volumetric representations of subsurface and underground structures and systems.
  • Familiarity with volumetric data models (voxels, block models, structured grids, and point clouds) and formats such as netCDF, Zarr, and HDF5.
  • Experience with scientific and geological visualization tooling (e.g., VTK/ParaView, PyVista, PDAL, GemPy/GemGIS) is strongly preferred.
  • Exposure to industry subsurface platforms (Petrel, DecisionSpace, Leapfrog) and their data-exchange formats is a plus.

Delivery & Collaboration

  • Experience delivering production software in cloud-native environments and collaborating within Agile teams (Scrum or Kanban).
  • Ability to work independently on complex problems and communicate technical trade-offs clearly to engineering and product stakeholders.
  • Comfort working within security-conscious, air-gapped, or sovereign deployment constraints.

Common GIS Tools & Technologies

  • 3D web rendering & mapping: CesiumJS (including OGC 3D Tiles and the 3D Tiles Voxel extension), deck.gl, MapLibre GL JS, OpenLayers, Leaflet, Three.js, WebGL/WebGPU (GLSL/WGSL shaders), and glTF for 3D asset delivery.
  • Geospatial data, databases & services: PostGIS/PostgreSQL, GeoServer, MapServer, GDAL/OGR, QGIS, GRASS GIS (3D/voxel raster), vector-tile pipelines (Tippecanoe, Martin, MBTiles/PMTiles), and OGC standards (WMS, WFS, WMTS, WCS, OGC API).
  • Subsurface, volumetric & scientific visualization: VTK, ParaView, PyVista, PDAL (point clouds), GemPy and GemGIS (implicit geological modeling), voxel and block-model workflows, and multidimensional array formats (netCDF, Zarr, HDF5).
  • Languages & interoperability: Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, and C/C++; plus interoperability with industry subsurface tools such as Petrel, DecisionSpace, and Leapfrog.
  • We do not expect mastery of every item — candidates should be fluent across several categories and able to reason about how they fit together.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience visualizing subsurface, geological, mining, or underground infrastructure data at scale.
  • Contributions to open-source geospatial or 3D visualization projects.
  • Experience with cloud-native architectures (containers, Kubernetes) and CI/CD tooling.
  • Experience operating in government, defense, energy, or other environments requiring sovereign/air-gapped deployments.
  • Degree in Computer Science, Geospatial/GIS, Geoscience, Engineering, or a related field — or equivalent experience.

Core competencies

  • Web-based GIS and interactive mapping development
  • 3D volumetric visualization and WebGL/WebGPU rendering
  • Open-source geospatial data engineering and tiling/streaming
  • Subsurface and volumetric data modeling
  • Performance optimization for large geospatial datasets
  • Agile delivery and cross-functional collaboration
